U.S. High School Curriculum Explained: Choose the Right Courses for College Success
Many parents and students planning for an international high school first ask not which school to choose, but: What do students actually study at a U.S. high school? How should courses be selected? What are the fundamental differences from China?
These questions deserve careful thought before school selection. U.S. colleges first review—and care deeply about—a student’s high school GPA. That GPA is directly shaped by which courses a student takes and how challenging those courses are. Understanding the curriculum is the real first step in planning. This guide breaks down the U.S. high school curriculum, from grade structure and course categories to practical course-selection strategies.

Like China, the U.S. basic education system spans 12 years, but the stages are organized differently. U.S. high school covers Grades 9–12, a four-year period roughly corresponding to Grades 9–12 in China. When possible, starting U.S. high school in Grade 9 gives students the advantage of experiencing the full four years before applying to college. Unlike China’s year-based system, U.S. high schools use a credit system:
Each course carries a set number of credits, and students generally need a grade of D or higher to earn those credits. Students usually take 6–7 courses each year, and graduation typically requires about 18–24 credits, depending on the school.


U.S. high school courses are generally organized into three levels, from foundational to advanced:
01 Regular Courses
Regular courses include two broad groups: required courses and electives. Required courses build foundational knowledge and commonly cover six areas:
English: British and American literature, with an emphasis on vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing.
Math: Algebra → Geometry → Precalculus → Calculus; most colleges expect students to complete three or four years of math.
Science: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, with advanced options available after the foundational courses.
Social Studies: World History, U.S. History, European History, and related subjects that help students understand American culture and current affairs.
World Languages: Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and other languages besides English.
The Arts: Visual or performing arts, an important part of developing a well-rounded education.
Electives allow students to choose freely according to their interests and future fields of study. Options can range from photography, programming, and debate to cooking, architecture, and theater. Many students discover their future college interests through electives.
02 Honors Courses
Honors courses cover the same subjects as regular courses but go deeper, require more reading, and set higher expectations. They are designed for students with strong academic ability and self-direction. Honors courses usually cannot provide college credit in the way AP courses can, but they are often weighted when GPA is calculated.
03 AP (Advanced Placement) Courses
AP courses are college-level classes created by the College Board. More than 3,500 colleges and universities in over 22 countries recognize AP results, including leading institutions such as Harvard and Yale.
Three major advantages of AP courses:
① Strengthen GPA: AP courses use a weighted GPA system, with top performance potentially earning a 5.0 and raising a student’s overall GPA.
② Demonstrate academic ability: Admissions officers consider the number and difficulty of a student’s AP courses when evaluating academic ability, intellectual curiosity, and willingness to take on challenges.
③ Potentially earn college credit: AP exams are scored on a five-point scale and are held each May. Scores of 3 or higher may qualify for college credit, reducing tuition costs and sometimes allowing students to graduate early.
Important: AP has two separate grades. A student’s regular AP course grade—based on assignments, tests, and exams—is assigned by the school and counts toward GPA. The AP exam grade is assigned by the College Board through the annual May examination; registration usually takes place in September or October of the preceding year.
Students may take an AP course without taking the AP exam. The course grade still affects GPA, and the exam is not mandatory.

For students with strong academic ability who want to take on AP courses, the following is a useful grade-by-grade guide:
Grade 9: Build a strong foundation (recommended: 1–3 AP courses)
Start with accessible introductory AP subjects such as AP Psychology or AP Macroeconomics. The priority is adapting to the U.S. high school pace, strengthening English, and developing effective study habits.
Grade 10: Choose with future interests in mind (recommended: 3–4 AP courses)
Begin trying more challenging courses such as AP Physics 1/2, AP Calculus, or AP Microeconomics/Macroeconomics.
Grade 11: Focus on academic strength (recommended: 2–4 AP courses)
Grades and course rigor in this year receive particularly close attention in college admissions. Consider AP Calculus BC, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science, AP Statistics, AP U.S. History, or AP Psychology according to your goals.
Grade 12: Finish strategically (recommended: 2–3 AP courses)
Do not take AP courses simply for the number. Reserve enough time for college essays, standardized tests, and extracurricular activities. Options may include AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature, AP Statistics, and AP World History.


① Understand school requirements and graduation standards
First learn how many credits your school requires for graduation and how many must come from required courses versus electives. Then plan a course combination that also supports your target colleges. The College Board website can help you compare AP course content and difficulty, and a school counselor can provide guidance.
② Connect courses to future goals and build on your strengths
Course selection should connect with your academic interests. Students considering business might prioritize AP Economics and AP Calculus; students interested in STEM might focus on AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, and AP Computer Science. While developing depth in an area, also maintain breadth to show varied interests and avoid an overly narrow profile.
③ Be realistic and avoid following trends blindly
Students can be admitted to excellent U.S. colleges with solid regular-course grades and a stable GPA. AP courses are not a requirement for college admission. If regular-course performance is not yet stable, taking too many AP courses can do more harm than good. Do not copy a “top student’s schedule”—U.S. high schools emphasize individual fit, and the best schedule is the one that suits the student.
④ Work steadily and take one step at a time
Planning matters, but consistently doing well in every course matters more. Choose courses that match your ability, complete every assignment carefully, and prepare seriously for each exam. GPA built over time is the real measure of academic strength.

At its heart, the U.S. high school curriculum is designed to teach students to take responsibility for their own learning. Which courses to choose, how difficult they should be, and how much effort to invest—each decision develops the core skills of self-planning and self-motivation.
Whether a student takes regular courses or AP, follows a humanities path or a STEM route, remember two things: take everyday coursework seriously and give it your best effort; choose course difficulty based on your own situation rather than comparison with others.
