Transform your home or apartment with traditional decorations that are both affordable and meaningful. Start with\u00a0<\/span>spring couplets (chunlian)<\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and the character\u00a0<\/span>“\u798f” (fu, meaning fortune)<\/span><\/strong><\/span>\u2014these red banners are the most iconic symbols of the festival. You’ll find them at supermarkets or online for just 10-20 RMB per set. Here’s a fun tradition: the fu character is often hung upside down because “upside down” (\u5012, d\u00e0o) sounds like “arrive” (\u5230, d\u00e0o) in Chinese, so it means “fortune has arrived!”<\/span><\/p><\/section><\/section>

Many people stay up late in a custom called “\u5b88\u5c81” (shousui), keeping watch over the old year.<\/span><\/p>
