{"id":1416,"date":"2017-04-28T13:30:41","date_gmt":"2017-04-28T13:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kleducation.org\/?p=1416"},"modified":"2017-12-20T16:41:41","modified_gmt":"2017-12-20T16:41:41","slug":"an-english-carnival-at-kl-international-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/2017\/04\/an-english-carnival-at-kl-international-school\/","title":{"rendered":"An English Carnival at KL International School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.klschool.org\/\">KL International School<\/a> (KLIS) in Chongqing held its first English\u00a0Speech\u00a0and Leadership Competition on April\u00a015th, with\u00a0more than\u00a030 candidates participating from the\u00a0U.S.,\u00a0China (Mainland,\u00a0Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan), Canada, South Korea, and\u00a0Slovakia.\u00a0Highly-esteemed educators from the\u00a0U.S.,\u00a0China, and Australia\u00a0served as\u00a0the judges for this unique English event.\u00a0It truly was an international academic gathering.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At\u00a0KLIS our goal is to prepare\u00a0students\u00a0who will thrive as educated global citizens, self-sustaining\u00a0learners\u00a0and ethical leaders,\u00a0and the theme of\u00a0this competition\u00a0fit\u00a0well. \u201cAll students rose to the challenges during this competition,&#8221; said Katharine\u00a0Hummel, KLIS\u00a0Academic\u00a0Principal. &#8220;The expectations for students, ages 7-13, were high, and they exceeded our expectations. This wasn\u2019t a typical English Speech Competition. Students were asked to do what students at KLIS are learning to do every day at school: speak, listen, discuss, collaborate, and think critically about the world around them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1418 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"644\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-10.jpg 644w, https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-10-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All students\u00a0participated in three rounds of competition. They presented a prepared speech, engaged in a group discussion led by KLIS teachers, and then summarized and answered questions about that discussion with judges.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1419 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-11.jpg 638w, https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-11-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Semifinalists were then asked to work together on problem-solving tasks in order to observe and evaluate their leadership skills. Finally, the top three participants from each age division advanced as finalists. These finalists stood on stage in front of all contestants, guests, and teachers, and answered questions from the judges. They were required to spontaneously respond to these questions, based on their experiences from the previous round, and their thoughts about leadership, both in their current lives and in their futures.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1420 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"643\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-12.jpg 643w, https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-12-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 643px) 100vw, 643px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>KLIS Headmaster Shane\u00a0Foster praised the student performances. \u201cA wide variety of ideas and viewpoints were developed during group discussions,\u201d he shared. \u201cThe students never cease to amaze and surprise me with their creativity and deep thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In our\u00a0student\u00a0interviews, contestants from different countries spoke highly of their teammates. They\u00a0agreed that the other\u00a0participants were excellent, and that this competition was indeed an international event. Lily, a 7<sup>th<\/sup> grader and champion of the 12-13 age division, told us, \u201cAll participants were great and I learned a lot from them.\u201d In her speech about Children as World Leaders, she focused on education by expressing how to replace the current grading system with score analysis which could help students build confidence by clearly knowing what their strengths and weaknesses are.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1422 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-low-res1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-low-res1.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-low-res1-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wang Chunye,\u00a0a contestant from a local primary school, has been learning English since he was three years old. Encouraged by his mother, Chunye participated in our competition and\u00a0gained a lot from the experience. During our short interview, he told us\u00a0his English is among the top in his school. But,\u00a0during this competition he met new friends whose English skills were better than his. He was grateful for the opportunity to learn not only from other contestants, but also from the teachers and judges.<\/p>\n<p>Headmaster Shane Foster, President and Head of School of the Barstow School network\u00a0with schools in both America and China, and also one of the judges, thinks of this competition as a platform to hear children\u2019s voices. \u201cI am very pleased and surprised to see what a wonderful job the kids have done. At first, I thought they would be very nervous, but surprisingly, they expressed their unique thoughts fluently, which makes me expect more of the final round in the afternoon,\u201d he shared. \u201cThis is a competition for the adults to get to know more about children, and to hear their voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1423 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-Shane_low-res1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-Shane_low-res1.jpg 645w, https:\/\/www.cambridgenetwork.cn\/cambridge-international-en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Speech-Comp.-Shane_low-res1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 645px) 100vw, 645px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Foster also shared with us his own opinion of the\u00a0event\u2019s\u00a0theme.\u201cWhen I was young, we didn\u2019t have any access to phones and computers, so we couldn\u2019t know what\u00a0was happening\u00a0around the world very easily. Children in current times, however, are exposed to various kinds of\u00a0media and networks of communication. This helps\u00a0them\u00a0know about what is going on all over the globe.\u00a0The topics discussed and shared during this\u00a0competition give them more space to think\u00a0about\u00a0many different perspectives.
